Nasal Spray Instructions

Use these instructions only if your prescribed medication is directed to be administered by nasal spray.

Before you use your nasal spray Confirm your medication, dose, route, and frequency on the prescription label. If your label or provider directions differ from these instructions, follow your prescription label or contact patient support before using your medication.

Administration reference

Hold the bottle as directed and position the nozzle gently inside one nostril.

Many nasal sprays are aimed slightly outward, away from the center wall of the nose. Follow your prescription label and medication-specific instructions first.

Technique reminders

These reminders help reduce waste and irritation. Your medication-specific directions come first.

Clear your nasal passages if directed Gently blow your nose before use if your instructions recommend it.
Prime the pump if needed If the bottle is new or has not been used recently, prime it only as directed.
Use a gentle breath Press the pump while breathing in gently through your nose. Avoid forceful inhaling.

Wash your hands

Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water before handling your nasal spray bottle.

Review your prescription directions

Confirm the medication name, dose, frequency, and whether one or both nostrils should be used.

Clear your nose if directed

Gently blow your nose before using the spray if your medication instructions recommend doing so.

Shake or prime only if instructed

Some nasal sprays may need to be shaken or primed before use. Follow the instructions provided with your medication.

Position the bottle

Insert the nozzle gently into one nostril. Aim slightly outward, away from the center wall of the nose, unless your medication instructions say otherwise.

Spray while breathing gently

Press the pump while breathing in gently through your nose. Avoid forceful inhaling, which may pull medication toward the throat.

Repeat if prescribed

If your prescription directs use in the other nostril, repeat the same process on the other side.

Clean and store the bottle

Wipe the nozzle if directed, replace the cap, and store the bottle according to the medication label. Do not share your nasal spray bottle.
