Oral Medication Instructions

Use these instructions only if your prescribed medication is directed to be taken as an oral troche, lozenge, tablet, or capsule.

Before you take your medication Confirm your medication, dose, route, and frequency on the prescription label. If your label or provider directions differ from these instructions, follow your prescription label or contact patient support before using your medication.

How oral troches are commonly taken

Some troches are designed to dissolve in the mouth rather than be swallowed whole. Follow the directions provided with your prescription.

Sublingual use Some troches may be placed under the tongue and allowed to dissolve.
Buccal use Some troches may be placed between the cheek and gum if directed.
Do not chew unless directed Avoid chewing or swallowing a troche whole unless your prescription instructions say to do so.

If your medication is a troche, place it under the tongue or between the cheek and gum only if directed. If your medication is intended to be swallowed, take it as instructed on your prescription label.

Allow troches to dissolve if instructed

If using a troche, allow it to dissolve naturally. Do not chew or swallow it whole unless your prescription instructions specifically direct you to do so.

Follow your prescription or provider instructions about eating or drinking around the time you take your medication.

Store your medication according to the label. Keep it away from heat, moisture, direct sunlight, children, and pets unless otherwise instructed.
