FAQ

A provider-reviewed methylcobalamin B12 injection program with individualized prescribing and at-home administration.

Methylcobalamin B12 Injections Program

Methylcobalamin is a form of vitamin B12, an essential nutrient involved in normal red blood cell formation, DNA production and nervous-system function.

A licensed medical provider reviews your health information and determines whether B12 injections are appropriate for you. A prescription is not guaranteed. If prescribed, the medication is prepared and dispensed by a licensed pharmacy and shipped directly to you.

Understanding Vitamin B12

Vitamin B12 is necessary for several normal biological processes. However, these biological roles do not mean B12 injections will produce weight loss or increase energy, focus or metabolism in every patient. Individual responses depend on factors including existing B12 levels, medical history and the reason treatment is prescribed.

Why Patients Choose the Injectable Format

B12 injections may appeal to patients who prefer:

An injectable form of methylcobalamin
At-home administration according to prescription instructions
Individualized dosing determined by a licensed provider
An alternative to oral B12 or troches

Your provider determines whether an injectable or oral formulation is appropriate based on your medical information and prescription needs.

Questions?

Our patient-support team is available by email, phone or live chat to help you understand the program and next steps.

How does the process work?

Complete the online medical evaluation and provide the requested health information. A licensed provider will review your information and determine whether treatment is appropriate. If prescribed, the medication will be dispensed by a licensed pharmacy and shipped directly to you. Learn more about our process.

Why might a provider prescribe B12 injections?

A provider may consider B12 injections based on a patient’s health history, symptoms, laboratory results, dietary intake or ability to absorb vitamin B12. B12 injections should not be expected to produce weight loss or treat hair loss, heart disease, neurological disorders, infertility or pain unless a qualified provider identifies an appropriate medical reason for treatment.

What type of B12 does this program use?

This program generally uses methylcobalamin, a form of vitamin B12. The exact form, concentration and formulation will appear on your pharmacy label and may vary by prescription.

What is the difference between cyanocobalamin and methylcobalamin?

Cyanocobalamin and methylcobalamin are different forms of vitamin B12. Methylcobalamin is a metabolically active form, while cyanocobalamin is converted by the body into an active form. One is not automatically better for every patient. Your provider determines the appropriate formulation based on your medical information and prescription needs.

What comes with the B12 Injections Program?

If prescribed, the program includes pharmacy-dispensed methylcobalamin and individualized instructions. Injection supplies may also be included, depending on the prescription and dispensing pharmacy.

What is the appropriate dosage?

There is no universal B12 dosage or schedule appropriate for every patient. Your provider determines the dosage, concentration, frequency and route based on your medical information and the specific pharmacy formulation. Follow your prescription label exactly.

My B12 arrived as a powder with a separate vial. What should I do?

Do not mix or inject the medication until you have reviewed the exact written instructions from the dispensing pharmacy. The amount and type of diluent can vary by vial strength and formulation.

Never automatically add 10 mL or another predetermined amount. If the pharmacy’s instructions are missing or unclear, contact the dispensing pharmacist before preparing the medication.

Why does my urine look pink or red after an injection?

Vitamin B12 formulations are naturally red, and some B12 can be eliminated through urine. However, pink or red urine can also have other causes, including blood in the urine. Contact your provider or pharmacist if the color is unexpected, persistent or accompanied by pain, difficulty urinating, clots, weakness or other symptoms.

What side effects are possible?

Possible side effects may include:

Redness, swelling or discomfort at the injection site
Headache
Nausea, vomiting or diarrhea
Dizziness or lightheadedness
Restlessness
Allergic reactions

Additional risks may apply depending on the reason for treatment and the patient’s medical history. Contact your provider about persistent or concerning symptoms. Seek immediate medical attention for difficulty breathing, facial or throat swelling, fainting, an irregular heartbeat or other severe symptoms.

How should I store B12 injections?

Follow the exact storage instructions printed on your pharmacy label. Requirements can vary by formulation. Protect the medication from conditions specifically prohibited by the pharmacy and contact the pharmacist if it was stored incorrectly.

How should I administer B12 injections?

Follow the exact route and administration instructions printed on your prescription label and provided by your provider and dispensing pharmacy. General information is available on our intramuscular injection instructions page.

How should I dispose of used needles and vials?

Place used needles immediately into an appropriate sharps container. Never place loose needles directly into household trash or recycling. Follow local disposal requirements or contact your pharmacy for instructions on disposing of a full sharps container and empty medication vials.
